The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Humans (SPCH) grew out of the concern of author Stanley C. Baldwin. The book A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to Save Civilization is his humorous yet serious personal account of learning to be a decent human being. His self-disclosures offer readers insights into our common shortcomings. The book also suggests ways to become agents of change and much more. Please see complete description on the page labelled: BOOK: Save Civilization

SPCH is a way to advance a movement that already shows some promising signs. We seek the emergence of a new decency in the culture. We believe this is a movement whose time has come, and that it is desperately needed in today's fractious and often abusive society. SPCH originated early in 2007 and is still in its early stages. We invite you to join us in this endeavor.

THE DOLPHIN CLUB

Want to play a part in bringing about a cultural shift in today's society? The Dolphin Club is SPCH's exclusive association of people who work together to that end.

Please see Join Us page for more information.

Making a Difference:

SPCH is a grassroots organization. We operate on the principle that individuals can make a difference. Members of SPCH begin with themselves. We recognize that most if not all of us are capable of acts of cruelty, sometimes without even knowing it (for example, when we make fun of a child.) Our purpose is to nurture an attitude of profound respect for other human beings because that is the source of humane behavior.

Dolphin Club members choose to act kindly, to support acts of kindness by others, and to oppose cruelty wherever it is found and whatever form it takes. SPCH also equips people to reduce acts of cruelty perpetrated against themselves. For example, see the Predator Alerts page, which provides information that can spare members a lot of grief..
Charter Member's Comment:

This seems an inspired idea; I like the whole premise. I like that it is based on Judeo-Christian principles but transcends religion. I can see you as a crusader for kindness, decency, and dignity--maybe even with a cape (just kidding).

Seriously, while other organizations may have a component of what you are doing, I can't think of any created solely for that purpose. It's as if human decency has gone without saying, and now it's just gone.

I think you are on to something. I am excited about it, and I would love to be involved in any way I can make a positive contribution.
